How to implement without slowing production down
The most common mistake is over-designing the intake form and forcing operators to answer ten extra questions during an active production problem. Start narrower. Pick one line, one product family, or one recurring defect type. Keep the first version fast enough to complete in under a minute.
Then, define the routing rules with production and quality together. Who gets alerted after one event? After three similar events in a shift? When does the workflow create a hold tag, a supervisor task, or a corrective-action review? Those decisions matter more than the software brand you choose.
It also helps to separate three layers of response:
- immediate containment: stop, segregate, review, or continue
- short-term follow-up: verify cause, quantity affected, and disposition
- trend review: decide whether the issue needs a deeper corrective-action cycle
That structure keeps the workflow practical. Operators record the event, supervisors make the next operational decision quickly, and quality gets cleaner data for later analysis.
